Their Land Our Home - London Premiere
London Emerging Competition
Ryan Powell, UK 29 mins, 2016.
Portuguese W/ English subtitles
Weaving legend and reality, ‘Their Land, Our Home’ is a snap shot of the final
days of the neighbourhood of Santa Filomena, one of Portugal’s last shantytowns. The film gives voice to those whose homes are being destroyed through the governments out dated slum clearance program. Through their stories we see that what is being lost are not just houses but a community, an identity and feeling of belonging. These are things that, once
destroyed, are not easily rebuilt.
Ryan makes films that aim to have a positive social impact, whether that is by exposing injustice or through helping people tell the stories that matter to them through participatory film projects. He has made films on subjects ranging from police violence, to the working life of migrant workers, to gentrification and urban change in New York. He has led participatory film programs with the homeless and long-term unemployed at centres in Brighton and London.
